"The problem began with a few issues between RailTop and LS Models. The problem then expanded to include Modern Gala. In late Summer, LS Models withdrew from the RAm/DE project and shortly thereafter, all cooperation between the two companies ceased. This left several cooperative ventures, including CNL coaches and the RAe Gottardo, as well as other planned productions in HO and N scale in limbo.
In the fall, RailTop sent out an email announcing further cooperation with the Italian company ACME. By the start of the Nurnberger Messe in February, it was learned that ACME would also cease cooperation with RailTop. This then placed the production of the Traxx models (Re 482.2/Re 484) in limbo as well. New SBB Cargo and Crossrail models have already been released by ACME independently.
The LSM-RT joint productions were exactly that, joint productions. In the case of the ex-CIWL Type P sleeping cars and Cisalpin coaches, the RailTop versions were simply repaints of LS Models moulds. The ownership of the designs and moulds of the joint productions (RAm, CNL, RAe) will likely be settled in court.
As far as future productions, any work that was already undertaken would be subject to legal challenge. Any work that was untertaken after the rupture of the cooperative venture will likely be able to continue to completion and be marketed by either of the companies as it's own product.
Whether the Gottardo will be released or not depends on whether there is a legal challenge or not. If LSM can show that the work was not the fruit of the joint venture, it will be legally free to proceed with production and marketing.
I guess that we will have to wait and see what transpires in this matter.
As far as LS Models acquiring the production of RailTop. As far as I know, Mr. Doll is reviewing his options at present. If he can find a new producer, he may be able to continue producing new models, and if he can obtain the moulds and masters from Modern Gala, he can resume production of previous models. Some have suggested that VI Trains may be a potential partner, and see a potential parallel to the old LSM-RT-ACME alliance between RT, VI and Euroscale Models. It is doubtful that RT could work with Fleischmann/Roco or resume cooperation with Heris due to prior experience.
I would love to see some kind of Swiss cooperation between either KML (ex- Roco CH) or Hag and RT. Herr Doll's plastic models would be an excellent supplement to the metal models made by Hag. KML has the distribution experience that would allow Herr Doll to concentrate on design and manufacturing models, which would make such a cooperative venture work.
It all depends on whether the individuals involved, who likely all know each other, can get along and work together."
